A meme is the internet’s language for funny. It’s the kind of humor that doesn’t require many words. Much like a shared joke that everyone gets. Memes are images that exist for peoples’ entertainment. Meme didn’t actually originate online, it was from the book, The Selfish Gene, in 1976 by Richard Dawkins. The word meme was used to describe a behavior that is spread across people in a culture. Meme today isn’t a behavior, it’s a piece of media, often humorous, that spreads rapidly through the internet. It’s even more viral with social media platforms such as Reddit, Twitter, Facebook, and other social media platforms.
There are different kinds of memes available on the internet. There are the cat memes, Gangnam-style memes, Chuck Norris memes, condescending memes, and more. Sometimes, memes exist not only for laughs but also for the shock value or to teach people lessons.
